Deep inside an overgrown forest, far away from people, lived eight gnomes. Their home was normal enough – a red and white polka dotted mushroom-esque style, complete with a lazy, spiraling flume of fireplace smoke wafting from the chimney. The candle lights inside cast a warm, golden inviting glow that simply whispered homelike comfort. Somehow all eight gnomes were comfortable living together under one roof instead of spread out. They were solitary creatures, never having been to the ends of their forest.

“Do you like chocolate? Well, they do too.
It sweetens the blood of greedy little hogs.
Eat candy at bedtime and they’ll come for you.
You can’t hide from the Lollywogs.”
Scotty glared at his dad. “Nice try, Dad. There’s no such thing as Lollywogs.”
Scotty’s dad had been reciting that tired old poem every Halloween for as long as Scotty could remember. It scared him when he was little, sure, but he was eleven-and-a-half now.
“Besides,” Scotty said, holding up the candy from his plastic Jack-o-lantern bucket. “It’s one Tootsie Roll. Eating one Tootsie Roll doesn’t make me a greedy little hog.”

On the fortieth day, The Water no longer rushed through the streets. The Water hadn’t receded completely, but held steady around the eighth story and The People tried to accept that everything below had been washed away. As they had every morning since the seas swallowed the shores, The People in the tallest buildings took to the rooftops to find solace in the sunrise, but only briefly, as they continued to survey the damage and tally their losses.
The quiet of early morning was the only peace The People had. A few short hours after dawn, the violence, the screaming and the keening would begin again. The People grew only hungrier and more panicked as the day went on.

Each memory flickered by like an old, spinning zoetrope. These rare moments, these crushing memory-laden moments, paralyzed and utterly defeated him in every way. He lay fetal, suffering each terrible image as it bathed his mind in its ghastly fluorescent light. Time could not be measured within the moment, but soon after, the clock would speak in terms of hours. The dazed recovery would be slow, but Marten Köhler would return to the world around him, mop the cold sweat, and return to his self-imposed imprisonment. Again and again.
