Open Call

The first year it was just the two of them. Last year they recruited their friends who were awesome enough to help them out. This year, 13 Stories presenters Elysabeth Williams and Jordan Drew want you to spook their friends and readers in a themed round of short stories for this upcoming Halloween’s blog!open call 2

We are looking for writers – ALL writers of any genre/experience who want to try their hand at writing a fireside type ghost story, and who are also willing to hang out with us until November. (Virtually speaking, of course.) If you’re interested send 250-500 words to thirteenstories@live.com of anything you’ve written that you think we should see (think blurb or hook) for consideration.

13 Stories will choose 12 writers to share a story in the 13 days of Halloween. (Complete details will be given after selection is complete, and you must be able to complete a new 750 – 1500 word project complete with edits/editor by 9/15/2013)

If you’re chosen, we will help you with edits, story prompts if you need some, and even make you a nifty cover for your short, so don’t be shy. If you’re not chosen, we still love you, but with only twelve spots to fill, we aren’t expecting this to be easy for any of us.

Submissions are open from June 3 to July 15, 2013.

Guidelines: 250-500 words in the body of the email. No attachments, please.

PG-13 subject matter, no overt foul language. 13 Stories absolutely appreciates the need for appropriate language at the appropriate place and time, but please understand, we will edit as we see fit. In other words – forkity fork forks won’t end up in the posted pieces, though they may be giggled at over coffee at Starbucks.

No rape, bestiality, incest, pedophilia, necrophilia, or squishy eyeballs because… ew.

  1. I need some clarification, please. This probably has an obvious answer but my brain hasn’t had caffeine yet so forgive me. So, the 250-500 words can be over anything and has nothing to with the story for Halloween? Does it need to be scary? Also, what part of this is themed?
I don’t understand. My head hurts . . . wanders away to make some tea.

    • Right. The 250-500 words can be any genre and doesn’t need to be scary. Once we have this year’s writery crew together, we will explain the theme to them, and then unveil it to everyone else with the promo/trailer in October. 🙂

    • Yes! We got it, and are very excited! I swear I tried to email you back around the 12th of June, but email and I do NOT get along, and sometimes it gets sent into no-man’s land, so I’m truly sorry about that. 🙂
